ヒースロー空港(Heathrow Airport)が2026年3月25日(水)、開港80周年を迎えました。1946年にランカスター爆撃機が飛び立ったテント村のターミナルから、2025年に8,450万人が利用する欧州最大ハブ空港へ──80年間に英国の歴史的瞬間を見届けてきた名場面を一挙に振り返ります。

1946年1月1日には改造されたランカスター爆撃機「スターライト」が証明飛行として離陸。そして3月25日、同機によるブエノスアイレス行きの商業フライトをもって「ロンドン・エアポート」は正式に開港しました。第二次世界大戦の終戦からまだ1年足らずの時代、旅客ターミナルは元軍用の大型テントを並べた「テント村」で、内部には花柄のアームチェアやソファ、生花を飾った小テーブルが配置されていました。

1946年、ロンドン空港(後のヒースロー空港)にて。かつて軍用だった茶色の天幕が、到着・出発ラウンジとして利用されていた当時の様子。

しかし快適さは気候に左右されました。暖房設備がない冬は極寒で、夏は壁ごとテントを取り外して風を通す有様です。旅客は泥だらけの滑走路エプロンを横断して機体に乗り込むため、足元を守る木製のダックボードが敷かれていました。開港初年度の旅客数はわずか6万3,000人。それが今日では1日だけで約20万人が行き交う空港に成長したことを思えば、このテント村こそが現在の壮大なハブの出発点だったといえます。

1970年1月、361人乗りのボーイング747がヒースローに初めて着陸しました。「空の女王」と称されたこの機体は世界初のツイン・アイル機で、巡航速度は時速約625マイル(約1,005km)。ロンドンへの飛行時間を30分短縮し、航空大衆化時代の幕を開けました。コックピットから離れるキャプテンとクルーの姿をとらえた当時の写真には「パン・アメリカン航空」のロゴが鮮明で、時代の空気が伝わってきます。

その6年後、1976年1月21日午前11時40分、コンコルドの初商業フライトがヒースローからバーレーン行きとして離陸しました。試験飛行初飛行から実に7年後のことです。同日パリからもリオ・デジャネイロ行きが飛び立つという歴史的な同時運航でした。この初便に搭乗した乗客のひとり、ボブ・インガムは3年間貯金してチケットを手に入れたコンコルドの熱烈なファンで、「サンライズ」のヘッドドレスに銀色のフェイスペイント、白と紫のローブという衣装で搭乗し、各メディアの名物人物として広く報道されました。その後コンコルドは2003年にターミナル1からラストフライトを終えるまで、超音速時代の象徴であり続けました。

1986年4月1日、チャールズ皇太子殿下(現・チャールズ3世国王陛下)とダイアナ妃殿下がターミナル4のオープニングセレモニーに出席しました。ところが皇太子殿下は直前の庭仕事中の事故で右手人差し指を骨折しており、腕を吊った状態でのテープカットとなりました。ひとりではうまくはさみが扱えない状況に、妃殿下がさりげなく手を伸ばしてはさみを支え、ふたりで一緒にテープを切りました。

この何気ないひと幕は、英国メディアが温かみをもって大きく報じました。王室の公式行事にありがちな堅苦しさとは対照的な「人間的な瞬間」として国民の記憶に刻まれ、ヒースローのエピソードの中でも特に愛されるシーンのひとつとなっています。

2003年11月25日午前4時35分、イングランドのラグビー代表チームがシドニーから帰国しました。ジョニー・ウィルキンソンの延長戦ドロップゴールで勝ち取ったワールドカップのトロフィーは、機内の専用シートに座って帰ってきました。夜明け前の早朝にもかかわらずターミナル4の外にはファンが集まり、「スウィング・ロウ、スウィート・チャリオット」の大合唱が響きました。1966年のサッカーW杯以来の英国スポーツ最大の快挙と評されたこの帰還は、ヒースローをまたしても国民的感動の舞台にしました。

コロナ禍の停止を超え、第3滑走路計画へ──ヒースローの現在地

2020年3月17日、新型コロナウイルス感染症を理由とした不要不急の渡航禁止措置が発令され、6日後の3月23日には英国が全国ロックダウンに入りました。欧州最多の旅客数を誇るハブ空港は必要最低限の便のみを維持せざるを得なくなり、かつてない静寂がターミナルを包みました。しかし2022年初頭に制限が大幅緩和されると需要は急回復し、2024年にはコロナ禍前の旅客水準を取り戻し、2025年には過去最高の8,450万人を記録しています。

第3滑走路建設計画の予想図。

そして2026年、ヒースローは次の80年へ向けた最大のプロジェクトに踏み出しました。2025年に英国政府から支持を取り付け、計画の概要が正式確定した第3滑走路建設計画について、今年から具体的な計画申請作業が始まっています。全額民間資金によるこの拡張計画は、就航便数と航空会社数を増やすことで旅行者の選択肢を広げ、運賃の競争力向上にもつながる見通しです。独立調査機関フロンティアの分析では、第3滑走路の完成により旅客への総便益が最大790億ポンドに達する可能性が示されています。テント村から第3滑走路へ──80年の歩みはそのままヒースローと英国の成長の物語でもあります。
